It all began with John Polk Campbell's donation of 50 acres for the construction of a town in 1833 and since, West been shaped by Civil War battles, Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, the Birthplace of Route 66, the suburban flight of the 1970s and 80s and the redevelopment of Downtown brought about by Vision 2020.
As Springfield's most walkable neighborhood, it has over 60 restaurants, 20 retailers, 20 pubs / clubs, 16 movie screens and 3 live theatre venues. West Central is the home of the IDEA Commons Missouri State University urban research park and the Brewery District with four local breweries.
